WIGWAM BENDIX

I made this disc after having my head buried in the studio for three particularly intense years. I needed to remind myself that good music can be made in any kind of space, and indeed without the pressure of the clock tolling in everyone's head. Craig Flory is an absolutely engaging and entertaining player on most any instrument. We recorded over 40 hours of improvisations in his living room with 31 of the best players in Seattle. Massive editing followed on this labor of love. We are very happy with the results and present to you some of the best, most raucous and inspired music this side of Mount St. Helens. You'll find an MP3 of one track on the home page and a review of the disc in the press section. The cover is by Chicago/Seattle artist Friese Undine. The image of me seen throughout this site was also made by Friese and I like it as much as I like Wigwam Bendix. Thanks to Craig, Friese, and everyone involved for making this disc like no other -- guaranteed!

19 AMERICAN WAYSIDES

This title was released by Anomalous Records (NOM 17) in 2003. Through their excellent work this disc received international visibility and numerous strong reviews. This review in the April 2003 issue of Wire magazine is a favorite. The disc delves deeply into my interest in how the sounds of nature interact with transportation environments. I love to drive for hours and then stop somewhere and listen to what's happening. In this group of pieces I installed small sound systems in these locations and influenced the soundscape with various treatments of 78 rpm records. On the home page you'll find an MP3 file of a piece from this disc for you to download.

THE LAST DOGHOUSE NEW YEARS

Do you remember the organ bar? Like the piano bar, it was a place where people who love to sing and get loaded would go and be with the like-minded. Seattle had the Doghouse, with Dick Dickerson at the organ. The venue closed its doors in early 1994, making this recording the last New Year's sing-along. This disc is packed with classic tunes propelled by Mr. Dickerson and stiff drinks and sung by an extra-nostalgic crowd of old timers primed to belt it out for the last time. You're sitting in the middle of it for close to an hour of pure Americana.

LOCALE

Released in 1992, this disc contains a wide-ranging set of compositions that feature international location recordings. The exploration of juxtaposition and sense of place dominates these pieces. Yes, I'm a surrealist and I apply this line of thinking to editing, composition, and the midnight espresso.

THE CRAWFORD OPERA

The Patriot Act set in an acid bath. I could have called this disc Get Off My Cross, but really it's about "them," not "me". Since we have dubya for four more years, this disc gets a new lease on life. This opera features an early set of 78-rpm sound-effects records and takes a peek into the world of America's favorite bed-shitters.

REMOVED AND HAUNTED

Years of recording and presenting location sound has led to this. Carefully edited location recordings from all over the world are recontextualized through the use of large numbers of notch filters and minimal multitracking. One moment you may feel as though you've been there, only to then experience a drifting disintegration of reality. This CD is about a feeling; the ominous approach of something from the past, an unforeseen sonic crackup at the speed of sound. Now available through The Bang Kung Assn. on this Web site. There is an MP3 download from this disc on the home page.

DISTANCE

The soft light of silence. The colorizing of a sonic space. Distance was made to bring our attention to the fascinating sound field surrounding each of us. The two pieces on this disc quietly suggest the traces of a thoughtful attentiveness at work. Using small sound events, reverb, and a Prophet 600 synthesizer, Distance is an acoustic treatment for whatever space you may be in. 1. Grand Coulee/Electric City (29:58) 2. South Of Beaufort (26:22)
